    Soft Evacuation Drill

After the TASC Homeroom meeting on the first day of school, students at ConVal High School practiced a soft evacuation drill.

This exercise does not involve activating the emergency alarm systems but instructs students, teachers, and staff to assemble in pre-assigned places in the school parking lot.

The drill's purpose is to prepare building occupants for an organized evacuation in case of a real emergency, without creating a stressful scenario. The weather was perfect for this training exercise!

After picking up their schedules in the link and hearing from the administration in the Lucy Hurlin Theatre, students were grouped with peer mentors to navigate to their scheduled classrooms and to answer questions along the way.

The concluding activity of New Student Day was an ice cream social in the cafeteria.

    Community Forum Addresses Bell-to-Bell Ban

The Community Forum on August 13 gave the ConVal school community the opportunity to see a draft School Board policy that addresses the new, state-mandated bell-to-bell ban on personal communication devices in New Hampshire schools.

The law, which went into effect July 1, forbids students to use smartphones, smartwatches, and other similar devices between the first and last bells of the school day. Students are expected to keep their devices turned off and put away during all instructional and transitional periods. The goals of the law — and the corollary school board policy — are to eliminate distractions, encourage in-person interactions, and preserve a learning-focused atmosphere.

Even before the law went into effect, a book study group had been convened at ConVal Regional High School to examine the negative aspects of cell phone use, the distractions caused by social media, and the resulting adverse effects on learning and student health. The group explored both the benefits and the challenges to creating a phone-free school environment at ConVal while, at the same time, similar discussions were taking place at the New Hampshire State House.

At the Community Forum, members of the group presented the scientific findings of cell phone-related studies, their own research, high school-based survey data, as well as the experiences shared by other school districts that had gone to a bell-to-bell policy in previous years. The staff members also linked the phone-free environment to the high school's CARES values and culture improvement goals.

Principal Heather McKillop thanked the group for their work and explained the procedures that will be in place when school reopens on August 28. These involve the use of NuKase phone cases for the uniform implementation of the personal communication device management plan.

During the Q&A period, audience members in the Lucy Hurlin Theatre and viewers online asked questions and provided feedback on the policy. In concluding the Community Forum, School Board Chairman Mike Hoyt thanked everyone for their participation and indicated that the input would be taken into consideration by the Policy Committee as the policy is being finalized.

To learn more about the bell-to-bell law in New Hampshire, see this brief explainer video on Vimeo. The entire community forum, including the Q&A session, was recorded and can be watched on the ConVal YouTube channel here.

"Disney Descendants" at ConVal July 24, 25

The ConVal Performing Arts' production of "Disney Descendants" will be performed on Thursday, July 24, at 6:00 p.m., and on Friday, July 25, at 2:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m.

"Disney Descendants" is a musical that takes place in Auradon, where Disney heroes live peacefully, while villains are banished to the Isle of the Lost.

Ben, the son of Belle and the Beast, offers a chance for redemption to four children of infamous villains — Mal (daughter of Maleficent), Evie (daughter of the Evil Queen), Jay (son of Jafar), and Carlos (son of Cruella De Vil) — by inviting them to attend Auradon Prep.

These four villain kids face the decision of whether to follow their parents' path or choose goodness.
